Two Important Committees Formed to Help Modernize Our Groundwater Management Act

On January 9, Governor Hobbs issued an Executive Order to establish the Governor’s Water Policy Council (“Council”), which has been tasked with modernizing the Arizona Groundwater Management Act. The Council, which is chaired by ADWR’s director, will update various groundwater management tools. Two committees were formed as part of this process: Assured Water Supply (AWS) and Rural Groundwater Management.

The Assured Water Supply Committee was established to review and recommend changes to Assured Water Supply policies. The Rural Groundwater Management Committee was established to develop recommendations for a water management framework to assist rural Arizona communities, which are experiencing high rates of aquifer depletion due to unregulated pumping.
