Congratulations to the 2024 Herman Bouwer Award Recipient, Mark Cross!

AHS and the Groundwater Resource Association of California (GRA) are proud to announce the winner of this year’s Herman Bouwer Award, Mark Cross of Montgomery & Associates.

The award, which recognizes those who have significantly advanced the understanding or use of MAR, was presented to Mark recently at BSMAR18 during our Friday luncheon ceremony.

Over the past 40+ years, Mark has brought a wealth of expertise to his projects — particularly MAR investigations, where he uses not only his technical skills but also his extensive experience in regulatory permitting and planning. He has led dozens of recharge feasibility assessments, successfully supervising, siting, designing, and implementing comprehensive programs. These investigations include a conceptual design for MAR facilities that will facilitate the indirect potable reuse of recycled water. In addition, he has developed conceptual and analytical models and provided oversight for numerical groundwater flow models for many MAR projects.

The committee consisted of previous Bouwer Award winners — Bob Rice, Mario Lluria, David Pyne, and Peter Dillon.

Mark’s MAR-focused experience spans 28 years. A frequent presenter at conferences, he has led 17 spreading basins projects in Arizona and collaborated on MAR projects in California, Chile, and Spain.

“Managed aquifer recharge is foundational to the City of Tucson’s water supply and reliability. Mark can be credited with making profound contributions to that outcome over many decades.”
