Study Background
Human civilizations have relied on surface and groundwater supplies in the Tucson region for thousands of years. Within the last 100 years, groundwater pumping increased to the point of greatly exceeding natural replenishment. In 1993, the Central Arizona Project (CAP) began delivering Colorado River water to the Tucson region. However, there are some geographic areas where significant imbalances between supply and demand exist due to infrastructure limitations.
These issues are compounded by our changing climate. Shortages on the Colorado River will reduce the amount of water available through the CAP. Changes in our local climate will impact our region’s environmental resources, including riparian areas.
The three-year Lower Santa Cruz River Basin Study will identify where physical water resources are needed to mitigate climate change impacts and improve water reliability for the municipal, agricultural, industrial, tribal and environmental sectors in the Tucson region.
Study partners include the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the Southern Arizona Water Users Association, the Arizona Department of Water Resources, the University of Arizona, Cortaro-Marana Irrigation District, the Central Arizona Water Conservation District and Pima Association of Governments.
