CAP is proud to announce the winners of its 2019 CAP Award for Water Research.
In first place is Thomas Whipple for his master’s thesis entitled “Planning for Depletion: Optimal Irrigation in the Pinal AMA under Changing Water Sources.” Tom is a hydrologist with ADWR, working in the Recharge section. He has a B.S. and M.S. in hydrology from the UA.
Second place has two winners. The first is Tiffani Cáñez for her paper “Mapping Fresh and Brackish Groundwater to Inform Better Management of Decreasing Groundwater Levels in the Wilcox Basin, Southeast Arizona.” Tiffani received her bachelor’s in hydrology last May from the UA and is now completing her masters, also in hydrology. Her research focuses on the combination of water quality and water management. The next second-place winner is Shelby Hoglund for her paper “Issues and Implications for Central Arizona Agriculture Associated with the Colorado River Shortage.” Shelby is a PhD student in the UA’s Department of Environmental Sciences. She is a Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research Fellow researching soil carbon in arid agricultural systems.
The CAP Award for Water Research is intended to encourage and support water research in colleges and universities, raise public awareness of water issues, and increase public awareness of CAP. First place winners receive $1,000 and second place winners receive $500, and all winners are sponsored by CAP to present their research at the annual AHS symposium.
