AUGUST 2025: WATER AND WARFARE

A monthly members-only column by Alan Dulaney

The Western United States is not the only region on the planet where conflicts over water supplies can be found. As water becomes more scarce, the competition for that resource becomes more heated. Governments are discovering, yet again, that water can be utilized as a tool in their arsenal. Water can be both a prize and a weapon, and perhaps more.

Dr. Pintu Kumar Mahla, who recently joined the Water Resources Research Center at the University of Arizona, has studied water resources and conflicts between India and Pakistan. You can read many of his observations here. He has interesting insights into the role of water in relations between countries that are often in conflict.
