The Pipeline Fire in June 2022 swept through Schultz Pass, damaging Waterline Road and the underlying pipeline from Inner Basin. It burned over areas recovering from the 2010 Schultz Fire, which required extensive repairs through sensitive forest land. While much of the rock and sand supports held up, the Pipeline fire severely damaged the road and severed the pipeline from the basin springs and wells in several locations. The basin springs and wells, Flagstaff’s earliest water supply, account for 20% of the potable water supply in summer months.
The Design-Build Agreement for Inner Basin Waterline Restoration Project was approved by City Council last month, allowing the Hunter Contracting-Jacobs Engineering partnership to begin design work to repair this critical water supply. This is the same design-build team that won a national infrastructure award for their work on the Schultz Fire mitigation.
