Saturday is the 2-year anniversary of the senseless slaying of Dr. Thomas Meixner.
The Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences at the UA has designated Friday as a day of remembrance. The UA and St. Thomas More Newman Center are hosting a remembrance event on Friday October 4, starting at 11:00 AM. There will be some time to light a candle, followed by a service from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM. All are welcome. Tom’s wife, Kathleen, along with his close colleague and friend, Dr. Martha Whitaker will be sharing reflections about him. The event will be livestreamed on YouTube; you can watch it here.
Last year at this time, AZPM journalist Paola Rodriguez initiated a beautiful plan to remember Tom: a set of audio recordings by family, colleagues, students, and friends, sharing memories about him. You can listen to those audio recordings here.
You can also listen to an interview by Emily Pritchard of 12 News in Phoenix featuring Kathleen Meixner, who shared her thoughts about Tom and school safety. “I was grateful for the opportunity to honor his memory and to advocate for continued positive changes at the UA and in our community.”
Dr. Meixner was awarded the AHS 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award at BSMAR18 this past spring for his contributions to the field of hydrology. He is, and will continue to be, mourned by many.
