The Bureau of Reclamation and various partners held their first kickoff meeting for a technical assessment of water resources in the a lower Santa Cruz River basin, which lies within the Tucson AMA. The objectives of this study include projecting future demands under a variety of scenarios that consider growth, climate change, and Colorado River shortages, as well as identifying infrastructure vulnerabilities and mitigation strategies. The study partners include the Southern Arizona Water Users Association, Pima Association of Governments (PAG), Cortaro-Marana Irrigation District, Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR), Central Arizona Water Conservation District, and the University of Arizona. The study will entail updating ADWR’s Tucson AMA groundwater model to evaluate effects of scenarios on groundwater levels, including those in riparian areas.
