Symposium Planning

Planning for the 2014 AHS/AIPG Symposium & National Meeting is well underway. The Prescott Resort & Conference Center (PRCC) has been selected as the venue for the upcoming symposium/meeting. The planning committee is also in the process of finalizing the pricing for the symposium/meeting registration, sponsorships, and exhibitor spaces. Dana Downs-Heimes and Paul Lindberg have nearly finalized the field trips as well. The wide assortment of field trips will appeal to Arizonans and non-Arizonans alike. The trips (and their leaders) include:

Glen Canyon Dam/Lake Powell – Bureau of Reclamation Tour and Antelope Canyon or Less Ferry Geology
Sedona Pink Jeep Tour, and Page Springs Wine Tasting
Two Grand Canyon South Rims trips which include a visit through the Trail of Time (lead by author Wayne Ranney)
Prescott Highland Center of Natural History and Sharlot Hall Arizona History Museum (Dan Campbell)
Jerome Mining District and Verde Valley Geology Tour (Paul Lindberg)
Geology and Hydrogeology of Upper Verde River Watershed (Ed Wolfe, Jeanmarie Haney, and Gary Beverly)
Geology of Prescott (Beth Boyd)
Geology of Sedona with red rock hike (Dana Downs-Heimes)
Geology of the Bagdad Copper Mine ( Trip leader TBD)
Verde Canyon (Clarkdale) Railroad Roundtrip (Trip leader TBD)

The planning committee is also working with the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension at Yavapai College to develop several interesting workshops.

There will be a joint AHS/AIPG Symposium planning meeting at the Tucson Marriott University that will be held at 1530 MST after the AHS Corporate Board meeting, February 15, 2014. In addition, Dana Downs-Heimes, Don Bills, and Peter Kroopnick will meet with AIPG at PRCC in Prescott to tour the facility (for those that have not seen it) and evaluate exhibitor space.

The combined symposium is currently listed on the Prescott Community Events Calendar with details to follow when the symposium/meeting website(s) become operational.

NAU SESES Seminar

In other news, AHS-Flagstaff co-hosted another NAU SESES seminar that was held on Tuesday, 21-January-2014, at 1600 MST in the Geology Building, Room 103 on the NAU campus. The seminar titled Concurrent Changes in Climate, Land Cover, and Population Growth Present Major Challenges to the Management of Natural Resources Worldwide was given by Dr. Paul Brooks (University of Arizona). The seminar was well attended and AHS-Flagstaff hosted a reception at the Lumberyard Brewery in Flagstaff after the seminar.

Please remember that AHS-Flagstaff will also be co-hosting an NAU SESES seminar on 04-March-2104 titled Summer 2014 Hydrology Internship with the AHS Flagstaff Chapter; Experiences of the 2013 Intern, and Opportunities for the 2014 Intern. This seminar will be given by our 2013 Charles C. Avery Intern, Mr. Benjamin Serpa. We are all looking forward to hearing about Ben’s experiences as the 2013 Avery Intern.

For those of you who have a hard time making the NAU SESES seminars because of your pesky day jobs — do not worry. You will have the opportunity to see Ben’s oral presentation at our next AHS-Flagstaff meeting tentatively scheduled for 19-Feb-2014 to be held at Peabody Energy. An announcement with details will be sent out for both the meeting and the NAU SESES seminar a week or two before the dates.

At this meeting, we also expect to hear updates on the 2014 AHS/AIPG Symposium & National Meeting resulting from the meetings in Tucson and Prescott.
