Climate Science for Change in Pima County

June 12 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Pima County Regional Flood Control District Monthly Brown Bag Series

Kelly Gassert, Alex Naegele, & Dom Dusseau — Woodwell Climate Research Center

Woodwell Climate Research Center conducts science for solutions at the nexus of climate, people, and nature. They partner with leaders and communities for just, meaningful impact to address the climate crisis with the goal of creating an equitable, healthy, and sustainable world. Members of the Risk Team will provide an overview of Woodwell Climate, as well as present results from our Pima County climate risk assessment which includes future changes in extreme heat, drought, and precipitation.

Kelly Gassert focuses on enhancing climate resilience and addressing inequities in under-resourced communities with high climate-risk exposure. She also manages the bias-adjustment and downscaling of daily global climate model data to resolutions as high as 1 km to inform high-resolution, localized analyses for decision makers. She has a B.S. in atmospheric science from the University of North Carolina-Asheville and a M.S. in geography from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Dr. Alex Naegele has an interdisciplinary background in climate science, environmental science, and international development, and studies the impact of climate change on society. Her current work examines climate impacts on a range of scales — from the intersection of climate change and national and regional security to working with under-resourced communities to build their climate resilience. She has a B.S. in environmental science from the Ohio State University and a M.S. and Ph.D. in atmospheric science from Colorado State University, where she also earned a graduate certificate in international development.

Dom Dusseau analyzes climate model data to provide actionable physical climate risk information to decision makers, and currently focuses on flood risk. To project how future floods will impact cities, he combined a riverine flood model with a stormwater model to dynamically simulate urban flooding. He also created DiluviumDEM, a new global coastal digital elevation model, to estimate sea level rise inundation risk. He has a B.A. in mathematics and physics from the University of Virginia and a M.A. in climate and society from Columbia University.
