The Tucson chapter is pleased to announce that it has selected the Leonard Halpenny Inter Scholar for 2024.
Samuel Booker is a junior pursuing a degree in hydrology and water resources at the UA. He is looking forward to working with four great host organizations in the coming months — Tucson Water, USGS Water Science Center, Clear Creek Associates, and Montgomery & Associates — and learn how each organization approaches solving complex hydrogeologic problems.
Samuel is not only a Tucson native but also a first-generation college student. He cites a trip to Sweetwater Wetlands Park as an early inspiration for pursuing a degree in water resources.
“Growing up in Tucson my whole life I’ve been fascinated with how the water in our community is used. One of my first exposures to a hydrology project in town was during a high school field trip to the Sweetwater Wetlands. Here I saw how water treatment and reclamation was used to help sustain water in our community and how it can even be used as a wildlife habitat.”
We look forward to hearing about his experience as an intern scholar.
