Congratulations to Our 2024 Bouwer Intern Scholar, Emma Cornelius

The Phoenix chapter is pleased to announce that it has selected the Herman Bouwer Intern Scholar for 2024.

Emma recently finished her second year at ASU as an undergraduate student pursuing a B.S. in geological sciences along with a certificate in water resources. As someone who grew up in Arizona, Emma has always been deeply concerned about our water resources and longed to be part of the solution. She is thrilled to start this internship, which she believes will be incredibly valuable for her future career.

Emma is looking forward to diving in and contributing to tackling our water resource challenges. “My perspective on hydrological issues is based on a holistic understanding of the interconnectedness between water, ecology, and human well-being. I am acutely aware of the millennium drought’s far-reaching impacts, not just on water availability but also on agricultural
livelihoods, urban development, and ecosystem resilience. While it is true that Arizona’s aquifers
offer a temporary buffer, it is imperative to acknowledge the finite nature of this resource. Relying on short-term solutions overlooks the urgency of implementing sustainable practices that ensure long-term water security for current and future generations.”

Congratulations, Emma!
