Abstract: Precipitation Mechanisms in the U.S. – Analyses of Trends in Hourly Data

Design storms obtained from intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves
are critical for sizing, planning, and managing infrastructure. In
this talk, I will first revise how IDF curves are generated in the
U.S. and their underlying assumptions and sources of uncertainty. I
will then present two studies aimed at improving IDF curves in Central
Arizona. The first presents an alternative statistical model that
accounts for different distributions of extreme precipitation in
summer and winter and could incorporate nonstationarity due to global
warming. The second study shows how precipitation estimates from
weather radars can be used to better simulate the spatial variability
of IDF curves and reduce their uncertainty. While presenting the
results, I would like to hear the audience’s perspective on how they
use design storms in their work and whether they consider the
uncertainty sources of IDF curves.

Speaker: Dr. Giuseppe Mascaro, Associate Professor at the ASU School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment

Giuseppe Mascaro is an Associate Professor in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State
University (ASU). His research has the primary goal of quantifying the
impacts of global warming on hydrologic processes and infrastructure at local scales, with a focus on extreme precipitation and flooding. Dr. Mascaro has developed creative ways to synergistically combine advanced statistical techniques with physics-based models of the Earth’s climate and hydrologic cycle. He has been involved and taken an essential role in multi-institutional and single-investigator activities funded by federal agencies (NSF, NASA, NOAA, DoE, DoD) and a public utility (SRP) to conduct significant, internationally recognized research.
