The Arizona Legislature has done its work for 2024, declared sine die, and hit the campaign trail. Governor Hobbs has by now passed judgement on the various water-related bills that were passed, and most were vetoed. Recall that she has used the veto power vested in her office quite frequently, setting an Arizona record for the veto stamp.
The Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (AMWUA) reported that a record number of bills concerning water were introduced in this session. This was not necessarily a good thing, as most of these bills were aimed at restricting or even dismantling significant parts of the Assured Water Supply program. Fortunately, most of these bills did not pass, and the bad bills that made it to the Governor’s desk were vetoed. Still, it indicates a mindset concerned more with freeing up developers to build more subdivisions than with protecting consumers who may not understand just how limited water resources truly are in Arizona.
