June 2025: Inaction in Action

Little has been accomplished in this legislative session regarding water. Despite the large number of bills introduced in the current session, very few have actually passed both houses of the Legislature and been signed into law by the Governor.

At a recent event organized by the Northern Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (NAMWUA), one of the state’s leading lobbyists, Russell Smolden, was asked how many bills relating to water had actually passed through the House and the Senate, and made it to the Governor’s desk for signature. He kindly provided me with the answer: two. That’s right, just two bills advanced all the way through the complete process without being blocked by one or another interest groups, with the two biggest interest groups being the Democrats and the Republicans
