The AHS Flagstaff Chapter is excited to announce the awardee for its 2021 Mentorship Program, Mallory Rakowski. Mallory is a junior at NAU, majoring in environmental engineering.
In the summer of 2017 she volunteered on an environmental conservation service trip in Costa Rica. Her main hydrological interests are improved hydraulic engineering and bioremediation of waste water treatment plants that result in higher quality outflow and cleaner water sources. She has worked on a number of engineering projects:
- Engineers to the Rescue, Nov 2018 — a draft project to rescue a dog from a well, was presented to engineers from W.L. GORE and Associates
- Microfiber Filtration, December 2018 — a presentation on how disc filters, membrane bioreactors, rapid sand filters, and dissolved air flotation tanks can aid in filtering microfibers from wastewater
- Flagstaff Sewage System, March 2019 — project manager for computer-aided drafting to recreate the Flagstaff sewer system on AutoCAD and Civil 3D
- Natural Filters to Stop Eutrophication, September 2019 — presentation about the use of rice stems, zeolites, and iron pellets to treat water in order to prevent eutrophication
- Legislation for micro plastics, March 2020 — created draft legislation for the reduction and eventual ban of micro plastic production. Detail on how a membrane bioreactor would be a mandatory part of wastewater treatment throughout the phase-out of micro plastics to ensure they do not enter the environment through treated wastewater
This summer Mallory will be spending two weeks in Africa to participate in a cheetah sustainability and conservation research project.
Please join us in welcoming Mallory to the AHS Mentorship Program.
