What Happens if You Just Add Water?
November 13 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Pima County Regional Flood Control District brown bag
Abstract: From muddy cattle ponds and rock pools of our surrounding desert and mountains, to the Santa Cruz River and its urban tributaries, wonderful and sometimes troublesome things happen when water is added to previously dry substrates. Over the last 50+ years, I have had multiple opportunities to look into muddy ponds, flowing waters, and riparian vegetation. This talk will give a brief review of some of the things I have found in puddles ranging from roadside beer cans to the Santa Cruz River.
Speaker: Kenneth J. Kingsley, Ph.D.: Dr. Kingsley earned his Ph.D. in entomology at the UA in 1985, with a dissertation on the mosquitoes of the Green Valley / Sahuarita area. His career has combined conservation biology and integrated pest management as a consultant for private industry and government agencies from local to national. He has had an adventurous career exploring wildlife and plants in a range of habitats from Hawaiian burial caves to mountain tops in Nevada. He has worked in 11 national parks and 10 states, under water, in deserts, riparian woodlands, and in mountain talus fields. He has conducted surveys for organisms ranging from bacteria to bighorn sheep and humpback whales. His work has led him to the understanding that people have made a terrible mess of things, but that we can change and make the world safe for ourselves and most other living beings.
