Results of the 2023 Member Survey

Thanks to those who participated in our recent member survey. Here’s a brief recap of the results:

  • A total of 57 people responded, representing 14% of our membership.
  • The vast majority (72%) of respondents were late-stage professionals, with 15 years of more of experience. No respondents reported that they were currently looking for work.
  • Nearly all respondents are members of the Phoenix and Tucson chapters; we only had a few from Flagstaff and out of state.
  • Respondents overwhelmingly rely on email announcements and our newsletters to learn about AHS-sponsored events and opportunities.
  • LinkedIn is, by far, the favored social media outlet for professional use. About 16% of respondents also reported using Facebook. Only a few reported using Instagram and Twitter professionally.
  • Of the many issues listed, respondents were most interested in water resource management and climate change / drought. They were least interested in topics such as mining hydrogeology, subsidence, and education.
  • Early-stage professionals are most interested in special talks / workshops and social events.

Of course, given the limited sample size and skewed demographic toward late-stage professionals, we understand that these results do not necessarily represent our entire membership; however, they do provide some insights into who we are.

We also had a few interesting comments:

“I think Alan Dulaney’s missives are the most enjoyable and informative parts of the AHS newsletter. I encourage you to encourage him to continue.”

“I am a graduate student and have been a member of AHS since my second year of undergrad. AHS is an incredibly welcoming, knowledgeable group of professionals. The chapter meetings and annual symposium have been great for career insight and networking while in school.”

“We experienced people like beer and wine tasting too!” (We hear you!)
