October 2024: Colorado River Status

A monthly members-only column by Alan Dulaney

The Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) has declared the Lower Colorado River Basin to be in a Tier 1 shortage condition for 2025. Releases from Lake Powell to Lake Mead will be 7.48 million acre-feet (maf). This is actually good news compared to what could have been, based on conditions just 2–3 years ago. A lot of work went into holding reservoirs water level elevations fairly steady. Most of the negotiations revolved around demand and conservation, and substantial cuts were agreed upon.

Not long ago, the Arizona Capitol Times held one of their “Scoop” events; this event focused on water issues. Discussants included major figures in Arizona water: Tom Buschatzke, Director of ADW), Brenda Burman, General Manager of CAP, Sean Bradford, EPCOR, and Leslie Myers, Associate General Manager of SRP. You can view the discussion on YouTube. The event was titled “The New Age of Water in Arizona,” and a major focus was on controlling demand.
