2018 New Mexico Produced Water Conference

Policy, Regulations and Economics to Support Total Resource Recovery

November 15–16, 2018, in Santa Fe, NM

New Mexico’s oil and gas industry is currently facing two major challenges associated with water management that threaten to limit future development: acquiring fresh water and managing water. These challenges are especially critical in arid southeastern New Mexico, where fresh water resources are limited and where disposing of water via deep well injection is becoming constrained by dwindling geologic disposal capacity and induced seismicity concerns. To help address these issues, New Mexico recently entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S.EPA to clarify the existing regulatory and permitting frameworks related to the way produced water from oil and gas extraction can be reused, recycled, and renewed for other purposes.

The conference is intended for oil and gas, water treatment and management, and economic development professionals. It will help facilitate greater collaboration among stakeholders to improve the regulatory and environmental frameworks and foster economically viable opportunities to enhance the conservation of fresh water and the recovery and beneficial use of produced water. Speakers will include:

  • Administrators from New Mexico, the EPA, and the Department of the Interior on produced water issues and trends
  • Representatives from the oil and gas industry and midstream companies on reuse of produced water and technical and policy challenges in New Mexico
  • Technical experts on emerging produced water treatment approaches, reuse, and resource recovery options
  • Private equity, legal, and state infrastructure experts on the requirements, logistics, regional economic development opportunities, and viable cost structures to industry and developers.
