Description:
The author and instructor of PEST (Parameter ESTimation), Dr. John Doherty, will use the four-day workshop in Phoenix, Arizona
to discuss model calibration, model uncertainty analysis, and the application of the program PEST within groundwater models.
The workshop will provide attendees with parameter estimation theory, sources of uncertainty in predictions made by models,
and experience in using PEST to calibrate groundwater models and explore their predictive uncertainty.
PEST is a general-purpose,
model-independent, parameter estimation and model predictive error analysis package developed by Dr. John Doherty. PEST serves as an
advanced for calibration and predictive error analysis of numeric models. The PEST gives the user flexibility through the use of zonation and
pilot points in achieving calibration and a better understanding of model response. The workshop utilizes the PEST software independent of
GUI software so that anyone can apply the package within their respective model.

Zuni Basin Fossil Field Trip, near Springerville, AZ
Trip has been rescheduled: May 1st weekend
The Phoenix Chapter along with assistance from Erin Young, Fluid Solutions, & Richard Brose, Four Corners Environmental, of the Flagstaff Chapter are coordinating a field trip to a very unique spot in northeastern Arizona to examine real life dinosaur fossils! Our tour guide will be Doug Wolfe, Renaissance Environmental Management, L.L.C.
Please join the Flagstaff Chapter and Doug Wolfe for an amazing opportunity to visit spectacular sites of the Zuni Basin. We will meet in Springerville, AZ Friday, May 1, and depart early Saturday morning for sites within a 60 sq mi area of Springerville. Doug will lead us to locations from which we will paint a picture of life during the Cretaceous, discussing the sedimentology, paleontology, hydrology, geomorphology and volcanology of the area.
Due to permitting issues and accessibility, all participants will be escorted from Springerville to the sites in vans or support vehicles. There will be no tag-a-long vehicles allowed. We will be at elevations between 7,000 and 8,000 feet and will hike some rugged terrain (up to several one mile long hikes from the vehicles). Expect temperatures as high as 80F and as low as perhaps 45F after dusk. More information and details will be sent out as a separate announcement in early April.
Participants may pay for a room at the Reeds Motor Lodge in Springerville at a special room rate of about $50 per night (field trip special prices are not yet known), or can join campers for car camping (no facilities). Springerville has grocery stores, at least one coffee house, and several bars. The Flagstaff Chapter will provide transportation from Flagstaff, dinner for all participants on Saturday night, and lunches and beverages for the field trip Saturday and Sunday. Space is limited so sign up early. Cost is $40 per person, which must be collected as a non-refundable deposit to hold your space. The deposit will be refunded provided a replacement is. Contact Erin Young at (928) 606-8422 or
eyoung@flusol.com for more information and to reserve a spot!
Thanks again to Doug Wolfe for volunteering to share this great field experience with AHS.
Surface Water Issues Workshop – Great Success!
The Phoenix Chapter’s second Technical Session was held on May 15, 2008 at ADWR.
We had an excellent, highly informative day with nearly 70 attendees!
Our primary beneficiary, 2008 Herman Bouwer Intern, Cheri Topel, was
also in attendance and provided assistance with the day's event.
Thanks in part to our sponsors, ADWR, Arcadis, EEC, EL Montgomery &
Associates, Golder Associates, Lewis & Roca, and PBS&J, Cheri's intern stipend is more than adequately funded!
We’d like to thank our sponsors, speakers, and participants for a supremely successful event. We look forward to another technical seminar in the near future.
We would also like to send special thanks to all our AHS volunteers who made this event happen.
In particular, we'd like to thank Lee-Anna Walker for spearheading this effort and Matt Beversdorf for coordinating with ADWR and maintaining our website for the event. If you see Lee-Anna or Matt, please express your thanks.
