5:30 PM to 9 PM
Student Union Memorial Center
University of Arizona, Tucson
The Arizona Section of the Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists
(AEG)
and the Arizona Hydrological Society (AHS) will be co-hosting the to provide
students studying within the many fields of applied geology with opportunities to meet
professionals in practice, research employment/internship opportunities, and to make
presentations on current research projects. *
Highlights for students attending the meeting will include:
- “Mini Career Fair” networking and potential employer recruiting opportunities
- Student’s dinner is paid for by AEG and AHS professional members (FREE FOOD!)
- Opportunity for students to meet and present their ongoing research and projects to

Students
We are inviting students from all of Arizona who are practicing, teaching, and
studying in the many related fields of economic,
environmental, and engineering geology; geological, geotechnical, and mining
engineering; groundwater, and water resources to
attend this event. Students interested in presenting their research and projects at the
meeting should submit an abstract (300
words or less) of their proposed presentation via email to Randy Post at the address below
NO LATER
THAN 8 am April 4, 2008. Upon receipt of all abstracts submitted by the deadline,
approximately 3-4 will be
selected for presentation at the meeting (with one possible alternate), and those selected
will be notified by April
8. All selected final presentations must be in PowerPoint format, with length not to exceed
15 minutes, and
allowing 3-5 minutes for questions and preparation for the following speaker. All
students who submit
abstracts but are not selected for presentation at the meeting are encouraged to create a
poster or other still
graphic presentation for display at the meeting event.
Educators
We respectfully request your support and participation in this endeavor. The focus and
purpose of the Student Night meeting is to provide students studying in the many fields of
applied geology with an opportunity and a setting in which they may learn more of the
breadth and depth of opportunities and varied disciplines from which they may pursue
future
career paths. The structure and schedule of the Student Night meeting should provide
students
who attend with opportunities including the following:
- To meet and interact with practicing professionals, including time for networking and
marketing themselves toward future employment and/or internship opportunities.
- To meet with faculty and students teaching and studying in fields of applied geology
in
other departments and at other schools.
- To present their research and work to the environmental and engineering geologic
community of Arizona with cash prizes of $200, $100 and $50 for the best presentations.
- To learn of scholarship and internship opportunities available from the AEG and AHS.
- To become involved with the AEG and AHS and/or create Student Chapters at their
schools.
Professionals
While the meeting is directed to the benefit of students, the structure and schedule of
the
Student Night meeting will also provide professionals who attend with the opportunity to
market
their companies to the students and recruit potential future employees during the ‘Career
Fair’
portion of the meeting event.
We are actively recruiting students to attend the meeting and to make presentations
via
communications with professors in the Departments of Geosciences/Geology, Mining &
Geological Engineering, Hydrology & Water Resources, and Civil & Environmental
Engineering
at our State Universities and local Community Colleges.
In order to provide further incentive and assistance for student participation,
we are planning to subsidize the cost of the student dinners at the meeting with the
purchase of dinners and display space by professional meeting attendees.

* The mission of the AEG, founded in 1957, is to provide leadership in the
development and
application of geologic principles and knowledge to serve engineering, environmental, and
public needs. The AHS, formed in 1987, is dedicated to advancing hydrology and water
resource research, planning, and development. AEG and AHS members represent
engineers,
geologists, and scientists involved in a wide variety of applied geology fields in private
practice,
academic, and governmental positions. Additional information regarding the
organizational
structure, membership, and mission of these organizations is available at the AEG
(www.aegweb.org) and AHS (www.azhydrosoc.org) websites.
